| Dog-Related Notes: |
Kinsman Ridge from Lonesome Lake jct. to Hi-Cannon jct. questionable. Piper made it up and down the sketchy part just fine, but he's 3 years old and a pretty solid hiking dog. Can't say for sure that every dog could make it up this spot without issue. |

Five of us broke out Lonesome Lake trail from the Lake. KRT was unbroken from the LL jct--we broke through waist-deep drifts and belly button-height branches...it was tough going. Halfway up the climb there is a very steep section that was at the time covered in snow, but after a couple of us climbed it, the underlying hard, blue ice was exposed. Several of my group were turned around here. At the top of this section the trail takes a HARD LEFT. I broke the remainder of KRT to the summit of Cannon and passed a few people on their way up on my return.
The rest of the trip was mercifully packed out thanks to the work of Phil et. al. Saw mostly snowshoes all day.
I'd recommend snowshoes from here on unless we get a few freeze/thaws. I would also recommend some thought as to which way you climb Cannon if you've got a dog in tow, short arms/weak upper body, or general distaste for sketchy hiking. |
