Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 30, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I originally planned on ascending Mount Cube Trail but had trouble finding the trailhead so I started on Baker Rd (a bit muddy, easy to lose control of the wheel a bit but not that bad and if my car did okay yours certainly should). One car that appeared to be residential on Baker Rd when I arrived at 8:30-9am. 3 other cars parked there not including mine or the residential one upon my return around 2:45pm. At the end of my hike coming out on NH25A I realized where I’d missed the start of the Mount Cube Trail; I saw an AT crossing sign on the right for Atwell Hill and pulled over but didn’t see anything. Got the guidebook out and saw that I had to continue 0.1mi didn’t the road. No plowed pullouts with a sign so I gave up. Somehow I missed the other AT crossing sign... oops. In any case, continue 0.1mi past Atwell Hill if traveling from the east and look for an AT crossing sign on your left. The actually trailhead is not very visible as it’s just inside the woods. There were two there cars here when I finished my hike.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None of any concern on the Cross Rivendell Trail. None that caused me a problem on Mount Cube Trail but note that several of the crossings are unbridged now (I think only one bridge remains). Decided to just walk through a half inch or so of water and get my snowshoes wet at one point. Everything else is a pretty easy rock hop or jump across.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Easy to follow since big trails were well broke. They are both well blazed too although a bit inconsistently. Very little in the way of blowdowns and such. One step over/straddled that is larger and may take a crew to remove about 3/4mi into Cross Rivendell. As the snow continues to melt, you may have to crawl under it. Shorter people may struggle with it now. I believe there was one duck under near the top somewhere.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn’t see any but I think most would do fine here.
Bugs
Bugs: Saw a spider. Haven’t seen any biting bugs yet but I already have a big bite...
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Please bring and wear snowshoes. I saw a large group that I’m guessing is from Dartmouth (probably about a dozen of them) and another couple and none of them had snowshoes. They all postholed some but it wasn’t too bad. The only times they really all poshosld knee depth and ruined the Trail was over water/drainages. Other than that the occasional posthole to the side of the trail and minor divots/rottorilling. I appreciated the person from Dartmouth who apologized for the postholing. I hope they all learn from their experience today.

Not a single raindrop or snowflake touched me today :) The summit wasn’t in clouds for the most part either and I had some views. The wind was much stronger than I anticipated when I started on Baker rd but it didn’t get any stronger as I gained elevation which made for decent enough conditions :)
