| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Finding the gate open and drive plowed, we parked at Camp Dodge. Route 16 near the camp has a narrow shoulder now due to snow banks. A better option is the plowed Great Gulf trailhead parking area, just north of Camp Dodge. |

Bushwhack, Imp Face Southern Branch, Imp Face Northern Branch
Apprehensive about whether the significant brook crossing near the northern terminus would be bridged, we decided to go out-and-back by way of the southern branch, as if doing the loop counterclockwise but turning around at the profile. We went in on the bushwhack from Camp Dodge. The snow conditions were surprisingly good, with no postholing on snowshoes, even off-trail. There were a couple short sections on the lower southern branch scant snow cover, but rest of the route was hard packed and well broken. Winds were high, but the ridge broke off most of the wind at the profile, permitting a comfortable, fantastic view of the Northern Presidentials -- running right-to-left Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Clay, and Washington, plus the major ravines and Great Gulf. Imp Face is on the 52wav list and should not be missed. |
