Comments
Comments: Grand Loop of Shaw and Roberts of 18.6 miles. Very diverse trail conditions.
Turtleback Mtn Trail being a snow-mobile corridor for most of its length is hard packed snow with some ice. This was bare booted even with 1-2 inches of new snow, but before the hidden ice patches!!! Trails like Bald Knob Tr and Turtleback Summit Tr can be barebooted / light traction but snow is softening so snowshoes later in day would be beneficial, these are lighter traveled in snow periods. Buschwhack off-trail is a mix of conditions but snowshoes are useful as snow-pack is 12-18 inches still and hidden tree traps exist. High Ridge Trail has seen very little traffic and snowshoes are suggested here as conditions are softening and the trail is long. Mt Roberts Trail is a toss up, most of it is a either exposed ground / rock or slushy snow / ice. I barebooted down after removing snowshoes at summit of Roberts. It is spring and mud and water are started to show, so conditions change morning to afternoon and day to day.
