Champney Falls to Piper to Summit of Chocorua. Champney is packed well, some areas loose. Light traction is OK but snowshoes are not out of question to smooth the trail over all. The trail was in great shape as we hardly saw any post-holes on the entire trek. We had on snowshoes on up to halfway up the Chocorua cone and then switched to MicroSpikes. There were small patches of ice afterwards which are avoidable and overall not bad with caution. A little windy at the top today but still glorious views. We checked out Champney Falls on the ascent and the gorge had beautiful ice bulges. I stepped off the monorail/hard pack on the Champney Falls Trails a mile from the parking lot and sunk down to my waist! |
