Comments
Comments: The short distance from the trailhead to the old logging road has a lot of bare ground and one large puddle. The open hardwood forest south facing slope has mud and running water, frozen slush, and hard packed monorail embedded in the surrounding snow pack. MicroSpikes or other light traction worked well today. The remaining trail to Starr King in the evergreen forest was a hard packed snow which can be climbed without snowshoes if you don't wander off the track. The ridgeline between Starr King and Waumbek can be negotiated with boots and traction however there are more opportunities for post holing in this section as there are some softer surfaces in places exposed to the sun. Most hikers got by without snowshoes but I saw some post hole and there was some damage to the ridge trail section from bare booting from hikers on other days. I switched to the snowshoes for the ridge walk. Great views of the Presidential Range from Starr King and the blow down area beyond the summit of Waumbek on the Kilkenny Ridge Trail. No sign of moose today. There was a skittish gray jay at the Mt Waumbek viewpoint.
