Peaks Middle Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Middle Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, April 14, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Room for 7 cars in the parking area. We were the 8th around 9:45am. Just beyond the driveway opposite the parking area there is a very wide spot to park which we did. Others had parked on the other side of the road (not nearly as far off of it) when we returned around 2.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Ice - Breakable Crust, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Snow/Ice - Postholes, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The largest one had a plank across it which you had to use. There was another with some logs in it that you had to use. I thought it was pretty easy but my parents didn’t. So I guess those who aren’t as experience might find it a bit tricky. The water wasn’t that high yet but it was flowing pretty good and I could see it becoming problematic in the coming weeks with all the melt.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail below where Middle Mtn Trail diverges from Peaked Mtn Trail is blazed in yellow and is easy to follow. Middle Mtn Trail proper is blazed in red and is also easy to follow. The blaze is new and frequently placed :) I don’t recall any leaners/blowdowns/stopovers. The trail is in good shape. Just a tad little bit of brush to push through.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one dog and lots of prior dog poop towards the beginning of the trail unfortunately. Seems like a good trail for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: I don’t recall seeing any but they’re definitely coming out.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Saw 5 others today and everyone including us was in light traction. My mother tried using snowshoes from the top almost back down to the jct with the Peaked Mtn-Misdle Mtn Connector but it didn’t go particularly well and she quickly changed back to her Hillsounds (grantees the snowshoes she has aren’t really meant for hiking). That said, there was occasional postholing especially if you weren’t carefully eyeing the center of the monorail. There were already some postholes in the trail but mostly on the side and not too bad at all in my opinion (although it was made somewhat worse by everyone in spikes today). Mostly the trail was churned up a bit from barebooted traffic particularly in the lower sections of trail. Bring snowshoes if you prefer not to posthole at all though!

Minimal snow depth near the bottom and it increase to at least 2-3ft deep higher up (probably a bit more) with some bare spots in between.

Not as nice a day as yesterday but still warm(ish) and the sun came out briefly around 11-noon. Unfortunately it was hidden again while we stopped and ate at the top.
