| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Piper trailhead unplowed and inaccessible, at least to a Subaru. Owner of access way will let you park for a few bucks. We opted to park at the White Ledges turnout slightly further north on 16. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable), Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Postholes |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Ice Axe |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All the streams could be crossed by hopping rocks. On the way back we were already so wet from postholing we just walked through the streams. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Shortly before Carter Ledge meets Middle Sister trail, right at the steepest part of the climb, we encountered unpassable blowdown, a jumble of trees, like maybe a slide had taken them together. it didn't even look like trail even more though the GPS said we were right on it and a tree marked with paint shortly before that point. We tried to find a few ways around it but the thigh deep postholing made it impossible. Trail markings are every 20-30 feet up to the first peak on Carter, but then mysteriously disappear. We only encountered one more marker close our turnback point. |

Challenging conditions. Seems like nobody had been up that way in a long time. Even in snowshoes we were postholing, going in knee deep and further. Postholing is not quite the right word. It's more like the whole surface was a snow bridge covering a slush pile, and we would periodically break through. Sometimes while standing still the surface supporting both feet would collapse in a mass and we'd go in to our waists. It took 5 hours to go 3 miles and 2000 feet up, another 3 hours to come back the 3 miles.
