Comments
Comments: Tough trail! I left the lot at 830 am and the monorail was in tact. I wore spikes up until Mt Blue then changed to snowshoes where the trail turned into soft snow. The overhanging brush up near Mt Blue was thick soaking wet, and therefore so was I. As I approached the summit's glacial terrain, I changed into spikes again and walked up the frozen brook to the summit. I summitted within 2 hours of leaving my car and The view was astounding! 360' with rising clouds and warm pockets of air.
The descent was very difficult. The trail softened and all the hikers I saw were wearing (dragging) spikes so tearing up the trail a bit more. I saw a total of six people on the trail. Only 4 of those people summitted and they left the summit by way of Gorges Brook.
On the way down the monorail destabilized, my snowshoes and then spikes finally were no longer effective. Just below the shelter I experienced 2 uncontrolled slides. I changed to crampons at this point. At the ledges, I was able to slide safely and with intent twice. Otherwise, I made steps until the ground was not so steep. The ice axe would have been helpful for stabilizing slides and making steps instead of making steps. I returned to my car at approximately 530pm.
