Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, April 21, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Carriage Road is still gated. Parked right before the gate probably around 10:15 am. The lot was already full with some cars parked along the road. The lot can only hold about 4 cars and this trailhead is a lot busier than that... similar situation when we retired around 2-2:30 pm.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Ice - Blue, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery, Snow/Ice - Small Patches
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The bridge at the beginning of the Piper Mtn Trail wasn’t underwater which was a good sign :) Some other very small water crossings that I assume are temporary and just made by all the recent rain. In any case, they were no problem.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All trails are well blazed and easy to follow. The trail jcts aren’t really marked at the top of Norrh Piper though so it could be easy to get yourself turned around up there if you didn’t have a map or if visibility was low enough. There were some blowdowns but nothing too bad. I think they were mostly on the Piper Mtn Trail. The worst was a small cluster of somewhat obnoxious walk overs probably around halfway up. I think you’d need a chainsaw and a small crew to clear these. They’ve already been trimmed :)
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one big one. Didn’t notice any dog poop which was nice. Dogs would be fine on this trail.
Bugs
Bugs: I may have found one black fly biting me! Overall bugs were not an issue though
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found two dog tags one nameless and one that said “Nina.” Email me if they’re yours!

Comments
Comments: We brought microspikes/hillsounds but there was hardly any snow/ice anywhere and what there was we just avoided so you could easily leave it at home ar this point. The trail was definitely wet and muddy and not particularly pleasant but I still found it nice to see bare ground. I found the mud manageable. Watch out for some wet rock though! I fell a few times and one group had a bad fall which prevented us from going on and doing Vista Trail like we’d hopes.
