Comments
Comments: They said "not the best time of year to enjoy the whites" and we dared to disagree! Yes, the trails were muddy, there was ice, and an unstable monorail in places, but nothing you can't handle with spikes, poles, and optimism. We had a great day. We chose this hike because neither of us had done it yet, and we knew there were no major water crossings. We brought our snowshoes, but didn't need them at all! Barebooted until about 2600 feet, when ice began to appear, and then it was spikes all the way to the summit of Starr King, on to Waumbek, and back. We lost the trail for a moment right after the fireplace on the way to Waumbek, and started to posthole. One we found the trail again, we had no problem with just spikes. My dog had a great time, enjoyed seeing snow again and romping (i.e.post holing) through it. Happy to have gone out there and done it!
