Comments
Comments: Tried to just wear microspikes on Ammo. That lasted about five minutes before I postholed to my thigh on the narrow and rotting monorail. We put on the snowshoes at that point and kept them on until we got to the hut.

Somehow we got lost coming up Ammo. Got past the major water crossing/waterfall and then did something that wasn’t right. Thick fog kept us from seeing anything useful. We knew the general direction of the trail so we just kept going up until we miraculously ended up right at the hut. Definitely did not take the normal route though.

Took off our snowshoes at the hut and wore spikes for Monroe. The sun came out and we had a great undercast.

Halfway to Washington, we took off the ‘spikes. Too much rock and not enough snow.

We were in the sun on Washington while the rest of the Presidentials stayed in the clouds. Beautiful sunny day up there and warm enough to lounge around for a long time.

Went back into the fog for Jefferson. Continued to bareboot due to lack of snow. Sun came out and fog started to lift while we were on Jefferson, and the day stayed clear for our descent.

We had been told that Jewell was a mess with soft snow galore and tons of postholes from snowshoes, so we decided to go down the Cog track (we had paid to park in their lot).We hadn’t done that before. It was a good choice - mostly bare ground by the tracks all the way down. What snow there was didn’t stretch on for too long. Definitely better than what I imagine Jewell to be like at the moment.

Great day out and it was a pleasure to meet everyone we ran into.

I am badly sunburnt! Time to repack the sunblock.

Alex will have a trip report on her blog sometime next week.
