Comments
Comments: USE SNOWSHOES.

Trail is in TERRIBLE shape. This is in contrast to a report 2 days earlier that said the monorail was solid. This time of year things can change quickly. And they sure have. I only took spikes based on the report.

The trail from the Cannon Resort parking lot to the top of Cannon (Kinsman Ridge Trail) was ok. Not great but bearable in spikes. It would have been better in snowshoes. If you slid off the monorail, you pole holed. It happened often enough that snowshoes are strongly recommended.

Kinsman Ridge Trail from Cannon to North Kinsman was worse. A lot worse. There is still 2-4 ft of snow on the ground up there so if you slid off the narrow unstable monorail, you post holed. I didn't get very far before I came on a very steep section that I didn't want to attempt with my dog in the ice. So I turned around.

I wanted to extend my hike a bit since I wasn't going to make it to Kinsman, so I turned south on Hi-Cannon trail. The conditions there were worse. I eventually came upon another very steep section that I didn't feel comfortable with with the tools I had, so I turned around.

Overall this hike was unpleasant and exhausting. It was the hardest 6.7 miles I've ever done.

It was also entirely my fault. This would have been fun despite the rain had I brought snowshoes.
