Comments
Comments: All trail conditions out there, but the snow is steadily receding... Airline was good until treeline on the way up, just a few patches of soft monorail above 3900 feet that spikes were helpful for. Crazy windy day on 5/11 above treeline (sustained 25mph with gusts enough to knock us over) that along with a thin coating of rime ice/black ice on the rocky mess that is the upper airline trail made it tricky to get to the summit. Star Lake trail was dry at the top of adams but then had long streches of deep wet snow just above Star lake/the hut that we postholed up to our hips a few times. Osgood trail up to the summit of Madison was totally clear, some rime ice on a few rocks but good footing. Likewise coming down Watson trail above treeline was tough due to the wind, but the rocks were pretty dry. Much more snow below treeline than on airline, with stable/unstable monorail and mashed potatoes in stretches down to 3200 feet. Below that--lots of mud and flowing water on the trail. Based on this description, it doesn't really sound like I'm selling it, but it was a glorious day out on the mountain.
