It's a fast hike with some of the smoothest trail I've ever seen in the Whites (meaning far fewer rocks, roots, and scree than usual.) The initial portion of the hike is on logging roads; fortunately the trail changes to a more narrow footpath after about 1/3 to 1/2 mile. The bloom is just beginning - small purple and white flowers make the ground festive, and birches galore are beginning to leaf out. The mud is manageable, though I'd recommend boots over trail shoes just in case you sink in. It's a glorious time of year to be out - birds, flowers, and still almost pre-bug. Maybe bring some bug spray, just in case :)
