Trails
Trails: Unnamed trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, May 18, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small unmarked parking area off Browns Ridge Road in Wolfeboro. This is 2.1 mi. south of Ossipee Village.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One small stream 0.1 mi. in, easily hopped.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of minor walkunders lower down and one large blowdown right at the junction with the informal trail ascending from the southwest, shortly below the summit. That one will need a chainsaw. The footbed on this newer trail is not evident in some spots, but the route is well-blazed with white plastic diamonds (and white paint for the last 0.1 mi.).
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Sure, but no water aside from that stream.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies were terrible - swarming and biting. I left the car with a head net on.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: This somewhat new trail, opened in 2016, ascends the steep eastern slope of Whiteface, angling up below the mountain's namesake eastern cliff (not visible from the trail with leaves out) and swings around on the ridge to meet the informal trail which approaches from the southwest. Both trails then run together a short distance to the wooded summit (high point just off trail on right) and excellent 180 degree view ledge 100 ft. beyond. Despite the short 1.1 mi. distance, this is a fairly stiff climb, but switchbacks help to ease the grades a bit.

The trail was mostly dry with only a few minor areas of mud in the first half mile. Awesome views from the near-summit ledge, where there is also a register, which I signed again. I didn't stick around on top too long, as the bugs were ferocious and there wasn't much of a breeze. I wasn't sure if I'd see anyone else here, but several people were out.
