Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Kind of rough mix of ice and slush but no problem for cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow - Spring Snow
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Main crossing was a rock hop.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: I took out several crossing blowdows and trimmed some others but a couple two big to do quickly with a small saw remain. There are places where branches force a lot of ducking. There was some postholes high (where the snow was crust over unconsolidated) and very low (trail very soft); those up high slowed me down in snowshoes considerably due to the broken crust.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The mighty tough little dog and Sadie had a grand time. The crust off trail held them up enough they could go pretty much where they pleased. Very little icing. Pepper got an unexpected dunk on the main crossing on our return leg when I arrived at the rock just before he did, but he took it in good spirits. They made new friends with 3 other hikers who delighted in their antics.

Comments
Comments: Mild down low; wintry on the peak with a chilly wind and rime in the clouds. I snowshoed while Sharon barebooted or, on the steep downhills, used an instep crampon. Three other guys (delightful fellows) who came up the Drakes Brook Trail and down Sandwich Mountain barebooted, and they did some postholing. My snowshoes softened some of the bareboot issues but they were also quite noisy on the crust in the upper sections. The trail up to Jennings was pretty well packed; beyond that it was a good crust over slightly consolidated snow; and now it is a mix of conditions. I would still recommend snowshoes for the whole trail beyond the crossing, and especially beyond Jennings, mostly for the sake of the trail but also energy expenditures, but they are noisy. It was a fun day with wonderful companions, Sharon, Sadie and of course Pepper.
