Comments
Comments: Showed up around noon at the border station - the only vehicle there. Temps were in the mid-40s, with little visibility. The trail along the boundary swath was extremely wet, and very muddy in sections, but still quite passable. As we started to get higher, we encountered minor drifts of snow, but they were never that deep, and we could either walk straight through them or around them. However...

...as soon as the trail leaves the boundary swath and enters the woods, a foot of snow appeared on the trail, quickly increasing to three feet. There was no discernable monorail (I'd assume very few people do this hike in the winter). The trail was easy to follow, but we were postholing up to our waists every other step. We probably didn't make it more than a few hundred feet before turning around. With snowshoes, we could have made it to Fourth Connecticut Lake, but we had naively assumed that the snow would be gone.

Moral of the story - either bring snowshoes or wait a few weeks.
