Comments
Comments: We started up gravel Smith Pond Road, passed through the gate and continued up the road to the sign for the Smith Pond and 1/2 Mile Pond trails. 1/2 mile forks to the right on a two-track dirt road moderate to steeply uphill until the road just disappears and becomes a hiking trail. Blue blazes all the way from Smith Pond to 1/2 Mile Pond. It ends on the shore where there is a fire pit and a bunch of tree stumps for seats. We started bushwhacking along the shoreline then headed up to a height of land. From there we continued to follow the ridge, correcting our heading a multitude of times as the heavy growth, blowdowns and occasional cedar stands would get us off course. Multiple bumps before we actually hit the recognized highpoint marked by a pill bottle. We managed to stay on a more direct heading back to the pond, ending up on a sort of path on the shore across from the !/2 mile trail terminus. We followed the path along the shore back to the trail, then followed the trail and the road back to our car. There is a blue blazed trail that leaves from the parking lot that we think may emerge on Smith Pond just before the two trails split but due to the ridiculous amount of black flies we did not explore it!
