Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, May 27, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The new parking lot is well-signed and has ample parking. It's clear they put a lot of work into it to avoid drainage-related issues.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only a couple one or two-step hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: New Path and Old Path were not blazed, but still easy to follow. Ski Trail has blue diamonds, and the new section of trail to the new parking lot was easy to follow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: If they don't mind very steep trails, they'll be fine. (If they do, don't bring them on New Path.) Also, there's no water along the ridge or at the cabin.
Bugs
Bugs: They're out. We had our head nets on the entire time.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: New Path started out mellow, but its upper half is VERY steep, and for a significant distance. And this is not climbing-over-and-around-rocks steep - this is your-feet-are-constantly-at-a-45-degree-angle steep. For this reason, we don't recommend descending New Path, since it would be easy to slide quite a distance on the loose gravel. The views from the South Doublehead Spur were excellent. The descent into the col was moderate, but don't miss the incredible view just after summiting South. The climb up to North Doublehead started off easy but quickly became steep (though not as steep as New Path). North Doublehead had a good view of Mt. Washington (still plenty of snow on its upper elevations). We descended Old Path - it was steep in places, but certainly not as steep or difficult as descending New Path would have been. The ski path was fairly muddy in a couple sections but mostly dry.

Thanks to this hike, both my hiking partner and I have redlined the Doubleheads.
