Cool and refreshing with submerged feet. Current did push two of four dogs around but that's because they're on the smaller side. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
A few step over blowdowns from the winter that could easily be sawed away. I forgot my saw though. |

Lincoln Woods, Black Pond, BP bushwhack, Lincoln Brook, Owl's Head Path, Brutus Bushwhack, Fisherman's Path, Old Franconia Falls Tenstsite Bushwhack
Lincoln Woods and Black Pond trails are in good shape. Bushwhack from Black Pond to Lincoln Brook was easy, we located the herd path and followed it 95% of the time. Lincoln Brook Trail is muddy and wet in spots but overall not too bad for a wilderness trail, I've seen it a lot worse! Owl's Head Path has running water on the slide, but you can avoid this by staying right higher up before entering back into the woods. In the woods the snow is all gone except for a big pile near the summit which is melting fast.
Used Brutus bushwhack on the way down, followed the herd path across then steeply down intercepting the skidder road at the drainage for the easy descent back to the trail. We hiked the Fisherman's Path to Franconia Falls on the way out, we paralleled the brook on and off herd paths before the path became well defined albeit narrow and overgrown. Black Pond and Brutus are now easier to follow than the Fisherman's Path. We also took one last detour off Franconia Falls Trail by the old tentsites, passing by rotting platforms and old outhouses until popping out onto Lincoln Woods Trail.
FYI, just a note to hikers. If you are used to these "whacks" or following herd paths you will be able to follow these with little issue. If you are not and are just a peakbagger it might all look the same to you so it might be best to stick to the trails as the water crossings are not dangerous unless there's significant rain.
Great day on Owl's Head with the pups :) |
