I wanted to re-visit since I only went to Chandler on my last visit due to finding some nice antlers. I followed same route to Chandler following FR 17 to log landing and following skidder trails to highest elevation above clearcut and then following a topographic spur ridge up east slope Chandler. Descent to col was relatively easy through good woods. Ascent to Sable from col was tough climb through not so good woods and rocky terrain. I passed a pretty tarn just above the col. I descended down east spur ridge from summit through some really nice birch glade terrain. It was like a walk in the park. I encountered a skidder trail which led me straight to log landing for FR 5046. I was thinking what a piece of cake this was turning out to be when I turned right (South) and lost FR 5046 and got lost in maze of overgrown forest roads. I had a way point for where FR was supposed to be and devoted much time and energy to getting back to FR 5046. I got back to it and followed it for another 1/2 mile when I made another wrong turn (south rather than north) and re-lost FR 5046 again. This time in low lands much dissected by brooks and hobble bush making for hard traveling. Finally crossed Slippery Brook and re-connected with trail followed by 1.7 mile road walk back to car. Biggest mistake was not carrying more water as I ran out of water right when the going got toughest. |
