| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
we got one of the last spots in the trail head lot at 9 a.m. When we finished a dozen cars were parked on Sawyer River Road |
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant |
| Recommended Equipment: |
| Water Crossing Notes: |
the Carrigain brook crossing took some deliberate rock hopping, since it is wide and the water was a little high, but not too difficult |
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
most blow downs have been taken care of, one at 4' high across the trail 1.5 miles in needed to be ducked under. Bigger issue is erosion on some of the wet stretches |
| Dog-Related Notes: |
lots of dogs on the trails today, all very well behaved. |
| Bugs: |
Tons of bugs. I hiked with my head net on for the 1st time this year. Up to 3000 feet the black flies and gnats kept us marching fast. Once close the ridge the breeze kept the off. But back at the car we raced to drop our packs and get boots off before we were mauled by the bugs. |

Perfect clear day to take in the spectacular views on Signal Ridge and from the tower on Carrigain. My 2 mountain goats & I passed at least 2 dozen other hikers on the trail and another 2 dozen were relaxing on the summit while we ate lunch. Though we did not feel crowded on the trail just far from alone. The trail itself is very wet in sections for the first 3 miles, then some running water and slick rock up to the ridge. Please try to rock hop rather than widen the trail in the muddy sections. The ridge to the summit is in great shape. We also got to meet the man with the 2 monkeys today at the top, Richard Gambale. Happy walking |
