Mosquitos and black flies were brutal. Worst I have had in years. Squitos heavier on S Moat, black flies heavier on N Moat. A co-hiker found a tick on her backpack while we were having lunch. Bring bug dope and use liberally. |

Moat Mtn. Traverse is one of the premier hikes in the whites. Do it on a blue sky day. The views from the top of S. Moat are epic and from N. Moat even better. You will be treated to a clear 360 view of the Whites with Mt. Washington your beacon to the north. As of June 8, there is still lots of snow visible on Washington. You'll ascend S. Moat, some rock scrambles on the last half mile. From there it is a short easy ridge walk to Middle Moat, then you will descend quite a bit before ascending N Moat - higher than the South peak. Coming off of N Moat the first mile is a descent down steep ledges but the footing is good when the rock is dry. Trail was surprisingly uncrowded. We did have a group of mountain bikers doing the traverse. |
