 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Howe Road is paved, then becomes hard packed. The first hiking sign is an arrow pointing further down the gravel road. The WMG describes the parking area as having a fence and a sign. That first sign is not it (even though there is a fence near an area large enough for a few vehicles). If you continue the .2 miles that the book says, you will come to a larger parking area. I did not find this section difficult (I drive a Corolla), but it is narrow - would not want to have an SUV or large truck facing an oncoming large vehicle. |

A few blowdowns, no big deal. The one a few minutes from the summit has been worked on (big evergreen blew over). Thanks! |

Good for them, but keep in mind that the "road" section of this hike passes through posted land. Don't let them roam here.
Impressed with the etiquette of a young woman and her dog. She called ahead to ask if we were o.k. with unleashed dogs. We have no troubles there, but it's good to ask. |

After deciding not to try for the Alpine Garden (high winds, low temps, etc), I deliberately chose a hike in the Moosilauke region due to this past week's reports. It seemed the only place not to get eaten alive. Good decision - a few black flies in the woods, none above due to winds. We didn't even have to use spray! |

We've done Black Mtn from the lovely, scenic Chippewa Trail in the past. This trail is lovely in its own way. Gradual approach, easy on the feet and knees. A green tunnel, but a wide variety of flowers and other plants. Trail alternates between steady ascent and flat sections. You're there before you know it. Upper sections had muddy spots and areas where water ran on trail. Not sure whether this is ongoing or due to yesterday's rain. Good views of Moosilauke, Franconia Ridge. |
