Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: There was only one other car at Ferncroft when I arrived around 7:45 this morning. Another one pulled in right after me and was going out to do some trail work on their adopted trail (possible reroute on Kelly Trail). Nice to meet you and thanks for all of your hard work Mike! I look forward to hiking Kelly Trail :)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only crossing the entire hike was at the beginning over Spring Brook which was bridged and in good shape :)
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: All the trails I was on today were blazed in blue (except two old and seemingly random yellow blazes inn Wonalancet Range Trail...maybe marking some sort of boundary??). All except for Wonalancet Range Trail we’re not blazed very frequently though. The other trails seemed to have a lot of the blazes fallen off or rubbed off the trees and were lying on the ground (I’d seen this before but never so many!!). That said, all trails were well defined and easy to follow. The only blowdowns I remember are large stepovers that have been there a long time and will likely continue to be. Great shape; thank you Trail maintainers!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: This would be a hard hike for many dogs given all the scrambling. I don’t think there was a lot of water either. A couple of the spur paths to views had cliffs or very steep drop offs as well which you’d need to be mindful of. In particular, the spur path on Wonalancet Range Trail drops immediately 50ft at the Ledge.
Bugs
Bugs: Awful. I don’t know if I’ve ever encountered so many mosquitos as I did on Old Mast Road this morning. When I finally put on bug spray at the jct with Walden Trail that helped but they still swarmed. As I continued to gain elevation, the slowly got better. At the summit the black flies were everywhere. The spray again worked but as always, I had to be constantly reapplying it. What a day to forget my bug net!!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Picked up some orange peels. I hear these take MANY years to decompose. Please do not leave them on the trail.

Comments
Comments: Did some redlining and gridding today :) Glad I got out as there was no rain and awesome views at many different points throughout the hike :) The trails were pretty easy to follow (you rely a bit on the blaze on the lower parts of Wonalancet Range though) but this really is a challenging hike. My 23 year old knees felt it by the en for sure!

The trails were very dry with only some drying mud except for around the summit area where there were multiple patches of significant mud. )
