Peaks Mt. Carrigain, NH
Trails
Trails: Signal Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, July 5, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Fairly large lot on Sawyer River Rd 2 miles from 302. We were the 5th or 6th car upon arrival at 8:15am. Lot looked full when we returned at 3pm. Sawyer River Rd is a dirt road, but in good condition and suitable for most vehicles.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All crossings are rather easy at this time given the limited rainfall these past few days.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail maintenance crew (of about 9 - 10) coming down SRT during our ascent were working on clearing out numerous waterbars. Overall, trail in very good shape from trailhead to summit. Fairly recent (last 3-5 years) trail relocations can potentially be a bit tricky to follow if not paying attention. Yellow blazes are scarce and limited to lower part of SRT.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy to moderate trail from trailhead to summit good for most dogs with numerous water sources over first 2-3 miles. A few well-behaved dogs on the trail today.
Bugs
Bugs: After a bug-free hike earlier this week up the Osceolas, the recent trail reporters for Carrigain weren't kidding in that the mosquitos in particular (black flies as well) are relentless and very aggressive throughout this entire hike. Bug spray (deet) didn't seem to help. It was a very hot humid day with still air which didn't help.

Comments
Comments: Suspect this could be a love-hate hike for many ... the first 2+ miles are basically flat and serve as a good warm-up for the real climb, but depending on time of year the biting-bugs can be horrendous with the amount of both standing and running water along SRT. The final 3 miles to the top is a moderate and gradual climb, but terrain can be an ankle-twisting minefield highlighted by small loose rocks and (slick) tree roots. Sounds similar to many other NH trails but somehow feels a bit different during the hike.

Arriving at Signal Ridge and proceeding to the summit tower likely confirms why you've hiked this incredible mountain ... the views are virtually unsurpassed almost anywhere else in the Whites. The majority of the other NH48 can be viewed from the summit tower's 360 degree views on a good day. Nearby views to the cliffs and scars of Mt. Lowell are impressive!

Nice chatting with a few other folks at the summit ... congrats to the young guy who finished his NH48 today!
