Nice quick bushwhack to this NH 2000-Footer / NH 500 Highest Peak.

From our parking location with the temp in the mid 90’s and threats of thunderstorms coming in a few hours we started bushwhacking south, first through some high wet grass and then open woods with muddy sections. Once out of that we started gaining elevation in nice woods at moderate grade with a few steep pitches here and there, skirted some rock outcrops and hit the somewhat flat summit and found the recognized high point.

After signing in we set off heading northeast dropping in nice open woods looking to do some exploring and all of a sudden, we were seeing tons of fresh muddy moose tracks and I said to Mary, we must have spooked it on the way up. She then said to me, NO look he’s sitting on the ground right in front of you. A big Bull Moose just sitting there 20 feet away looking down hill in the mud he dug up. He turned back and noticed us, got u and trotted away. We set off in his direction and spotted him one more time and the we lost him. We then ended up wading through Coon Brook, picked up that unnamed road and had a short road walk back to the truck.

That’s the 3rd moose (and a fawn last week) we’ve spotted in the woods recently.
