Trails
Trails: Hale Brook Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, July 7, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The lot (space for about a dozen cars or so) was full, but there is ample parking along the side of the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A few very minor bubbling brooks. All are fairly easy to rock hop across.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail seems to be in great shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: About a half dozen well behaved hounds throughout the roundtrip up and down Hale.
Bugs
Bugs: None! Well, almost none. There was definitely insects on the trail but they minded their own business. At the summit, completely different story. Black flies formed a welcoming committee and immediately swarmed. But they didn't venture behind the clearing at the top, so 98% of the trip was remarkably bug free.

Comments
Comments: I was in NH and decided to give Hale a try. Parking is easy. The Hale Brook Trail starts wide and gently ascends for the first 1/3. It gradually begins to get steeper, but plenty of switchbacks make the ascent as easy as you're going to find among the 48. Sunday's weather was picture perfect and it took only about two hours from car to summit. The summit is not above tree line, but the cairn (which you will not miss) is smack dab in the middle of a fairly large clearing. Hikers of all ages from little kids to seniors were out on the trail. If you have never hiked a 48, Hale is a perfect place to start.
