Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, July 13, 2019
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The road wasn’t real muddy coming in but there was lots of water and large divots in the road to be careful of. Only one other car there around 1pm. I was the only car there when I left around 6;30pm although another had just pulled in.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Never anything more than a little trickle. Other than the drive in which could get nasty, this would be a great hike to do during high water!
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail was in very old shape. I don’t recall anything much in the way of blowdowns. The trail was unobscured and pretty clear. There were many planks along Pine Mtn Loop Trail and I wasn’t exactly sure what they were doing there. Most were on the side of the trail (sidehill) and did not look at all secure so that if you stepped on them, you’d go tumbling on down. Perhaps there were yet to be installed? Or the trail became eroded on the other side? Maybe they just need some work? In any case, I wouldn’t step on most of them. There’s not a whole lot of blaze on Pine Mtn Trail (Ledge was better at least on the ledges and I think Pine Mtn Loop was too), in fact I don’t think I saw any until on the ridge but all trails are nonetheless easy to follow. The sign at the bottom of Ledge Trail has its distances mixed up. I believe it’s 0.9mi to Dolly Copp Road and 0.6mi to Pine Mtn Loop Trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I didn’t see any but I imagine most would be okay. Not any water for them though.
Bugs
Bugs: None at the car but as soon as you entered the woods the mosquitos came out. Not all that bad although I did use bug spray once they made their presence known. I think I saw one black fly up near the summit but it was fairly windy up there so it kept them away. Please watch out for ticks in the high grass areas. I found two crawling on my legs after walking through these sections.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: Pine Mountain Trail, Chapel Rock Spur, (Chapel, Angel, and Gorham) view spurs, Ledge Trail, Pine Mtn Road. Pine Mtn Loop Trail

Redlined all the trails on Pine Mtn yesterday! No water crossings, very little mud (the most was in the parking lot!), and only a bit of wet rock up on the ledges. A relatively easy hike as I’m pretty sure I’ve got Lyme but don’t have Doxy in me yet :( Great views for little effort too :)

Went up Pine Mtn Trail doing all the view spurs along the way (all that are mentioned in the guidebook are signed and obvious...there’s one shortly after Gorham view that is not signed and is not mentioned in the guidebook). Chapel View has a nice bench and you get a good view of the Mahoosucs that you don’t get at Chapel Rock although the views are really great there as well. From the summit I went down Ledge Trail, which, while steep, was comfortable enough going down. Once at Pine Mtn Road, I hiked out to Dolly Copp Road. I wasn’t paying attention to my maps when I checked out the hike earlier in the day and didn’t realize it came out across from Pine Link Trail where I’d gotten picked up from a partial traverse years ago (cool to come out of the woods and not unexpectedly say “I’ve been here before!”). I then went up back up the road all the way to Pine Mtn Loop Trail. Please do not continue along this road unless you are a guest of the Horton Center. Once back at the jct with Pine Mtn Trail, I went back out the way I came to my car.
