Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes and eye flies. They eased off some as it got hotter. Wore permethrin treated clothes, socks over cuffs; probably not necessary for the trail portions of this hike. Didn't find any ticks.

Comments
Comments: First official bushwhack, Canaan Mtn. First hiked up to Mt. Flagg, then went back down to these flat ledges that were close to due West of Canaan. Around 1910' or so. Lots of bear scat there. Some knocked over cairns just inside woods as though someone tried to mark the spot. I went straight across East until hit Canaan. As described in earlier trip reports (thank you!) some tight woods, but not too bad. Lots of big ledgey rocks with lots of leaves in between.
Found the small summit jar hanging from a tree with a rawhide shoelace, on the tree nearest to high point. Nice to see some familiar NETC names in the logbook!! Up until that point, I really had no idea whether that compass was going to work or not. All I knew was I seemed to maybe have ended up in the right place.
I basically went due South to get down, with a little Eastward bias in hopes of snagging the corner of the Dave Green trail, near the little river. I did manage to do that (after passing thru the Canaan Mtn trail) though clearly luck was involved.
I am surprised how scratched and bruised up I am now! I was checking for ticks and all I find is wounds!!
I would recommend this mountain for an initial bushwhack because there are many surrounding trails and landmarks to help protect you from getting lost. It would probably be easier orienteering-wise if you start the bushwhack from Canaan Mtn trail, because you can see the land going up up up in front of you visually, and the summit is at the top. (This has been done, see the trip reports). It's probably a harder climb with the rough rocks and brush though. Many rocks turn on you. Whereas if you come in from the West like I did, you go mostly across and have only a short climb. But then again, you won't be able to see where Canaan actually is when you're going thru the tight woods. You'll HAVE to navigate.
