Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No major issues, all rock hopable
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Most trails are in the Sandwich Wilderness area, lots of step overs and duck unders but good conditions for wilderness standards - had to stop and look around a few times to see where the trail went but overall no significant navigation problems Alltrails app helped to double check a few places though. Multiple missing trail signs: no sign for Whitten Brook trail at the junction with Big Rock Cave trail, no sign for Old Paugus trail at Big Rock Cave trail junction (went right by that junction on the way up without realizing it), and no sign for Whitin Brook trail at Bickford trail junction - all other junctions well signed.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The ledges on Old Paugus trail descending from Paugus summit and the gully section on Old Paugus trail just above the junction with Big Rock Cave trail may cause problems for less experienced trail dogs, otherwise no serious issues. Lots of water down low but very little fresh water up high, if doing the loop up and over Paugus pack some extra.
Bugs: Very few, one of the many reasons I love fall
Lost and Found
Lost and Found:
Comments: Great day redlining in the Sandwich range - see above trail conditions. Not a fan of Old Paugus trail with the scrappy gully section and the ledges descending from Paugus (and because I had to double back on a few sections) but otherwise great trails, lots of dirt and cushy trail beds. The view from the south ledges on Paugus was better than expected, great place for an extended break. Saw a bear way off trail near the wilderness boundary on Big Rock Cave trail but didn't see a single person all day!
