| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
careful not to park the gate - I parked just to left of gate of Buffalo Road in Wentworth near the Plummers Ledge Geologic Site |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Wet/Slippery Rock |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
|
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
several minor crossings of streams that feed Stevens Brook - interesting small gorges |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Logging road is marked as "Closed" on NHF&G maps, multiple <10 year old skidder roads - perhaps dozens just south of pathway of the trail - I made the mistake of trying logging roads first and got caught in multiple very overgrown/prickers/moose bed overgrown clearings - one after the other after the other |

I have tried to trace Stevens Brook Trail many times and this time I actually got to the Carr Mountain Ridge (but did not head up the ridge due to threat of rain/mist). I criss-crossed the presumed trail corridor as described in the 1976 White Mountain Guide. Very little evidence of any trail. I might have found one blaze down where they trail corridor leaves the official logging road - but I'm not sure. Many interesting features in this landscape. Skirting around the large log clearings was a challenge of navigation, however. I would say the non-logging road portion (about 1.3 miles to the ridge) was 80-90% NOT through log clearings. I am pretty sure I found the site of the foot bridge mentioned though I found no evidence. The specific location looks like modern skidder-loggers had to traverse the stream and drag logs across the stream at that location. Once on the ridge I did poke around a bit and surprisingly didn't notice any evidence of humans though I know there are supposed to be blazes and perhaps cairns. I think the blazes might be visible when coming from the eastern portion of the trail corridor which I did not explore.
Separately, there is evidence here and there of much earlier logging operations, presumably the early 1900's as I noticed large old coiled rusted cables and very old skidder roads.
Of course, I'll be back a few more times to explore.... :) |
