Comments
Comments: Not sure if this was the best way to do this mountain but here goes: we followed the KRT up about 1.8 miles to 1800' elevation. We set a heading that would bring us over a bump, hopefully missing the marshy areas others had encountered when leaving the trail further up. We ended up heading over a bump between the trail and Square Mountain which unfortunately meant tangling with some heavy spruce areas. We learned today that all bumps/mountains in this region have clean woods below a certain elevation then heavy spruce cover surrounding the summits. Once we summited this bump and headed towards Square the woods cleaned out and you could actually see our goal mountain through the trees. Down to a col then a gradual ascent until about .2 miles to the summit when the climb steepened significantly and the spruce started. Very thick at first then cleared out slightly with very soft velvety carpet of moss the rest of the way up. The jar is on the summit ledge which provides unbelievable 180 degree views! Worth it! We descended pretty much the way we had come up, although did find clearer woods, and even stumbled on FR 104! Followed it a short ways before heading more towards the KRT. Managed to go over another smaller peak, again covered with ridiculously thick spruce before heading down towards the KRT through clean woods, popping at about the 1 mile mark. The rest is history.
