Small parking area on the south side of North Road, about 3 miles from the junction with US 2 in Shelburne, NH. Maybe fits 3 cars max. Signage for the trail is visible from the road. Don’t block driveways. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
All are rock hoppable, even with increased water levels from last night’s rain. Man, increased water levels make the cascades so pretty... |

 | Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Ironically, I hiked this trail in September when the lower elevation blazes were bright but the higher elevation blazes were faded. Today, with the understory in hibernation, the blue blazes really stood out. Even the really faded ones. The Spur is wonderfully blazed in yellow and signed. The doorway is easy to follow. |

 | Dog-Related Notes: |
Town law is to leash dogs. This trail does not pose hazards to four legged hikers. |

I took the ‘fam to this less used trail system as I explored it in September. It was an easily followed path but much more slippery due to the fallen leaves. I had been here before so I let the family take the lead to see if there were any trail finding issues. None noted. They were all able to follow the trail easily, with concentration in the overgrown parts. But then, there was a marked reduction in foliage making everything look more open.
Peabody is well blazed and signed along the private property areas. The blue blazes continue the entire trail and now easier to see given the lack of foliage. We were able to follow the trail by paying attention. In the lower elevations you are treated to an almost old forest foray with soft footing in a wide trail corridor. The footpath is easily discernible this time of year. There is a nice rope to help cross a potentially tricky, short rock slide area. This is only about 6 feet long but looks foreboding without the rope. Then there is a phenomenal ladder after the slide that takes you up an otherwise nearly impossible short vertical rock face. This ladder is NICE. I mean some carpenter did this ladder. It’s that nice. Some of Peabody is overgrown, but pay attention and you will see the footpath in the understory.
Bald Face Spur is AWESOME! Yellow blazed, well blazed, and signed. Take this Spur. The views are wonderful and did not disappoint today. So glad we ignored the weather report...
Met one hiker and his cool, leashed dog as we were heading down. But that was it on this nice, clear day.
Another good day in the Peabody Forest! Thank you maintainers for keeping this trail active! |
