I recently moved up to this area, and noticed these two peaks while running a workout on the Skookumchuck trail. What intrigued me was the open woods, and how it appeared one might just walk right up to the summit guided by sight alone. So today I believe I picked off Scarface Mtn. I was able to just keep looking up, and climbing higher, until I found the high point by eye. I soon wish I'd brought my poles. I got a little spooked about 2/3rds of the way up in some ledges where I spotted a deer hunter's camp gear, and no deer hunter. This sense of trepidation increased when I started following a bearing from Scarface Mtn to Big Bickford Mtn and started getting into spruce, bear scat and big deep dens in the ledges. Plus the ledges started getting steeper, and I hadn't worked my way down that way yet so didn't know whether I'd get into cliffs. So I gave up on Big Bickford and veered back around NW off the side of Big Bickford to give myself plenty of time to get down, and indeed there was a small section of cliffs to weave thru that was 'interesting'. Kind of deal where you might climb down quite a ways and then have to climb back up and try a different way. Those cliffs may get worse, as you go S, so possibly my approach to Big Bickford via Scarface is the best approach. But maybe after deer season:) |
