Started the hike at the remote Welton Falls North trailhead up on Valley View Rd. Saw hawks circling above the power lines just minutes into the hike, and I continued to see hawks and ravens way above me during the entire hike. Quite a few bear prints about 50 yards beyond the junction with Welton Falls South trailhead. Saw moose/deer prints & scat throughout my trip.
I barebooted it all the way to the summit of Mt. Oregon. Crunchy snow, maybe an inch or two in depth....icy patches in spots on the ledges leading to Mt. Oregon. I put on microspikes at the summit and kept them on for the rest of the day. I continued on the Oregon Mt Trail to the junction with Carter-Gibbs. I scooted south down Carter-Gibbs, reconnected with Elwell, popped out briefly on Old Dicey Rd, and headed back to the Welton Falls trailhead.
Didn't see another person all day. This is a beautiful, remote area with lightly used trails. I plan to snowshoe this route later this season. |
