Surprisingly quiet at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center despite the nice weather forecast. Rolled in shortly before 8 AM and got one of the closest spots to the main building. Still lots of open parking spots when I got back around 2 PM. |

Hiking the Rockpile in November doesn't get much better than this. Full and continuous snow coverage from base to summit, with minimal exposed rocks and practically no ice. The entire route was also packed down very well- so well in fact that I was able to comfortably wear light traction for the entire hike (although I did bring snowshoes, crampons etc. just in case). The snow on some sections of trail did start to soften as the temperature rose, but it wasn't a challenge to walk on. The weather ended up being just as stellar, with mostly sunny skies, barely any wind, and relatively mild temps. Ended up spending an hour on the summit and it felt amazing to be up there without being knocked around by strong, frigid wind gusts (as was the case a couple weeks ago when I hiked Washington via Ammo Ravine and Crawford Path). Can't wait to see what's in store for the Whites after the winter solstice. |
