A most beautiful day to be up on the high peaks. No clouds in the sky, sunshine was warm with the absence of any wind even though the temps started in the single digits. You could see for miles from both summits. A substantial amount of snow covering the trail but not enough to merit snowshoes yet. Lots of rocks still peaking up from underneath the snow cover. Snow was pretty well packed on the lower section but loose granular as we got higher, which made it difficult to get traction going up. We barebooted most of the way. It would have been more efficient to have put on the spikes earlier. We donned them at the hut to do both summits and kept them on the entire way down. There were some small, frozen ice banks along the way but very manageable without the spikes, just slower going. We limbed out a big spruce tree that had fallen across the trail, thus eliminating the need to pitch into the woods on the side to get around it. Quite a few hikers today so the trail got nicely packed and is ready for more adventurers. If you didn't choose to hike today, your really missed out! |
