I could see bare rock on Artist's Bluff from the highway. I took the loop trail, turning immediately left at the trailhead. Spikes and gaiters worked well, the surface was from 2-5" of frozen granular. The loop trail was like half broken in. Not really boot packed yet, but I wasn't slipping or slogging either. Coming out of the col to Bald mtn, there's a bony rock staircase area. I could mostly keep my spikes in snow. The ledges, where exposed, had been blown bare, which was good because some minor scrambling was required at the craggy top of Bald, and it was good to be able to get my fingers into crevices and grab stuff. There was some taking your spikes off, only to have to put them right back on. I mostly walked like Iron Man, clinking along, dulling my spikes as necessary. I'm sure they'll snap soon anyway. |
