Hiking solo, I parked at Rt 3 trailhead, took Indian Head trail up and the Mt. Pemigewasset Trail back down.
3 reasons to consider going clockwise like I did: 1)The 1 mile+ roadwalk back to car will be downhill. 2)You get a good view of the Indian Head cliffs from bottom to top, as you come up, which you won't see if you come up the other way. The cliff has a dangerously tilted top, so it's nice to safely appraise the cliff from below. 3)Nice view of peaks on the way back down.
Indian Head trail was unbroken, with fresh 1" of light powder on the bottom. Higher up the depth increased to 3-4". Watch for ice patches under snow, some rocks had water run over them and froze like a shallow brook. So under the powder, it's like frozen steps. Not a lot of this, but be ready for it, and you won't go down. I put my spikes on there.
Mt Pemigewasset trail was clearly the more popular approach, saw several bareboot tracks, and met one friendly dude coming up as I headed down.
You go under the highway 4 times. It feels wrong, so be ready to ignore it. The views were great, I was re-energized after that. In fact, the woods seemed so glum in comparison, I started back down only to turn around and go back for one more good look, like a smiling dog that comes back for just one more pat. Nice short hike, I will be back.
The link below has a map I found useful. |
