Comments
Comments: A mixed bag of trail conditions today - a dusting of snow at the trailhead, lots of ice and several inches of drifting fluff up top. We started out bareboot, put microspikes on about halfway up Welch, and kept them on the rest of the way. The rock slabs on and around the summit were genuinely treacherous - hard water ice covered with a few inches of fluffy snow. Pretty much everyone in our party took a tumble at one point or another; fortunately none of those occurred where a long slide was waiting to happen. Once there is more snow cover and maybe some freezing and thawing the traction should improve, but right now I would recommend full crampons up top. With all that, it was a great day - dramatic skies, nice sunset.
