Comments
Comments: We headed out Thursday night to spend the night at the hut. The trail was well-established from the road entrance all the way out to the Bonds, easy to follow. Microspikes or bareboot was all that was needed all the way to the hut. From there out to the Bonds we retracked the already established trail in snowshoes since about 3 inches of snow had fallen overnight. The snow was easy to navigate since it was so light and fluffy. The windy gusts had created a number of drifts that were about a foot high or higher in some spots but very manageable. The ladder up to Zealand is now exposed but the snow on it will need to be kicked in to make it more friendly to climb. The alternative route to the left is very difficult to climb. Not sure which way will be better! Lots of snow covered trees at the top which was beautiful. New snow fell late in the afternoon and by the time we got back to our car another 1-2 inches had fallen and it was still coming down. Large group of people were headed up to the hut for the weekend so the trail should be well packed out again before the reported rains come in on Monday which should make for some really nice hiking next week!
