Light Traction for the first mile, then put on the snowshoes and kept them on until reaching the wilderness boundary on the way out. Conditions were all over the place today. Rocky Branch to the bushwhack was mostly fine, although some hidden mud pits near the height of land. The Engine Hill whack started off great but then went through the hidden mud pits of doom for a quarter mile, then meandered a bit until dropping to the Isolation Trail. I bypassed the two crossings right after the whack and hit the third which was easy, however, trail conditions were anything but, the trench was drifted in and I kept breaking through into mud numerous times. I've hiked this mountain quite a few times and in every month and this was by far the most hidden mud I've ever dealt with. Once past the last campsite I made the usual b-line to cut off Davis Path. Davis Path was the best part of the hike, deep drifted snow which was fun to break out!
Didn't see anyone else, but there were bareboot tracks continuing on the Rocky Branch Trail at the Engine Hill whack split as I was coming back out. It was a grind of a day but it's always nice to head through the glades in the snow. :) |
