Comments
Comments: Broke out the Greenleaf trail from I-93 to the hut. At the start bare booted over 4-5” of fresh powder - rocks and boulders lurking under the powder. Changed to spikes when the trail got steeper just before the big turn away from the highway. Still had difficulty with the ground conditions as the spikes couldn’t always get down to the hardpack underneath the powder. Changed to snowshoes at the hut as the remaining 1.1 miles had snowdrifts. Visibility from the hut to the summit was poor with light snow falling but tracks of other hikers and cairns were relatively easy to follow. Very cold on the summit estimating low single numbers with well below zero wind chill, light breeze, 15-20 mph. The way down to the hut was challenging on snow shoes. My companion wisely changed to spikes but I stayed with snowshoes and fell a few times. Conditions seem to worsen at this point with more snow falling resulting in partial whiteout conditions. Packed out the Greenleaf trail with snowshoes from the hut to the highway.
