Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, April 15, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Sawyer River Road closed. Plenty of parking just off 302 in the winter lot. No problems getting in or out.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Spring Snow
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing best avoided by using the wack up the north side of the stream. If, as we did, you use the trail, then watch out for icy rocks on the first section, and check out a large tree upstream a bit will keep you dry in the second. Crossings after the C Notch trail are wet boots & gaiters affairs as the rocks are under water, but they are not at all risky.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of large duckunders in the mid section of Signal Ridge, up the ridge there are two step arounds and one mess that is a bit of a pain to get around and it may hide some spruce-fir traps as the snow warms.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The mighty tough little dog used the tree trunk to get across the first crossing; the others were wet, mixing swim, jump and walk in water. he also wasn't found of the steel grates on the viewing tower. Otherwise it was an easy day on the trails and road - no icing or postholing.

Comments
Comments: We barebooted up, putting on the microspikes after awhile, on a mostly crusty monorail, sometimes raised but often hidden. If you stepped of it, then a posthole was likely. Where the sun hit the trail it softened quickly but once the shade returned the trail regained some crustiness despite the mild temps. On the hike down we attempted some repair of postholes as we went along, and in the hardwoods we were all in snowshoes. It was a nice snowshoe out, and great to be hiking in them and a T shirt. Back on the road I stayed in them quite a ways while the others took them off. We met one couple coming up after us who came in on the short wack to avoid the first crossing, which we used on the way out. It was a wonderful day out, the views were great and the trail still in good condition. This is normally not my favorite hike but having future 2011 Gridders Georg and Steve along made it a great one. Pepper enjoyed keeping track of them both.
