Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: we parked at the spnhf pickerel cove trailhead on shedd hill road in Stoddard. the lot was unplowed. it was easy enough to biff in with an awd, but smaller cars may want to shovel a little first. there is a trailhead kiosk with maps and other info.

Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: one notable blowdown on the east loop of the trail high on stoddard rocks. the main trail to pioneer lake and on to Stoddard rocks is well maintained, signed and marked. other trails shown on the trailhead map and online are much harder to follow and have the feeling of not being maintained.

Comments
Comments: trails had a mix of snow cover and nearly bare ground. in a couple short sections snowshoes would have been slightly useful, but they would have been useless for most of the route as recent rain has wiped out most of the snow. the route to Stoddard rocks was straight forward with very cool glacial erratics at the highpoint. from there we started down on a trail that heads towards the notch between Stoddard rocks and carter hill, but lost it very quickly so bushwhacked in open woods towards the northern outlet of the long pond between the peaks. the outlet was pretty easily crossed and we started on a bushwhack up towards the summit of carter hill with more good woods crossing part of the trail we had hoped to follow. a snomo trail runs north-south of the summit and after checking out the area around the spot elevation we went south and jumped off the snowmo trail for a short bushwhack up to the recognized highpoint. from there we dropped back down to the pond outlet between the peaks and were actually able to follow an old yellow blazed trail south then an old road most of the way back to the Stoddard rocks trail which we followed back to the parking lot. a very cool area. the town of Stoddard website has good information and maps though take the trails on the maps with a grain of salt as outside of the main route to Stoddard rocks they appear to be maintained minimally if at all.
