I parked in the moose mountain reservation lot at the drivable end of new portsmouth road in middleton. the lot was not plowed. it was a non issue parking today with mid clearance awd. I am not sure what the protocol for parking here is in the winter if the lot is not being plowed. |

all but one crossing on the piper mountain trail is bridged. this crossing was hopped pretty easily. |

roughly 4-6 inches of new snow over bare ground for most of the route. fluffy mid to late morning, but it got stickier as the day went on. up high in the pitch pines there was a tricky mix of slush and hard ice under the new snow in ledgy areas. that was really the only notable ice under the snow on the whole route. some very minor ice and wet spots on piper mountain road. to reach north piper I left piper mountain road east of its junction with the piper mountain trail at a clearing and old woods road. I followed the road for a bit then took an older road north a few minutes before bushwhacking in open woods to the summit. got lucky and was able to find the register on the ground despite the snow. descended the same way and took the trails back out to the car. light traction useful in places, exacerbated balling of sticky snow in others. |
