Comments
Comments: Snowshoes from 302 to 302. Followed one set of snowshoe tracks to about 0.5 past the Mizpah junction where we met the guy on his way down. He said he summited Pierce, planned to do Ike as well but turned around do to poor visibility, losing the trail, and snow drifts. We carried on. Donned layers at "tree line." Our "party" of four broke trail to Ike, quite windy going across, westerly winds buffeted us in the open sections. Snow depths went from scratch to several inches to some knee deep drifts. The real fun began at Ike loop trail. The wind was howling. What a hearty crew. Visibility was poor but not whiteout. We were pelted with frozen precipitation and arrived at the summit looking like frosted walking things. The summit "cairn" was indeed a welcome site. Our summit time was limited just beyond a tag and go but not by much. We tightened up and headed back, coming off the cone was indeed a chore, high wind and pelting precip. Got to love cairns in these conditions. The walk across was like breaking trail all over again, able to see faint tracks and total blow in. The woody at Pierce was indeed a welcome site. We headed for tree line for a snack. Saw a variety of hikers heading up, we believe to Pierce, bare boots more so than snowshoes. An exhilarating day to start the new year. Scott, Lisa, and Melissa all had smiles, may have been frozen in place, when we got back to Highland Center. What a great day.
