I am putting all of these summits into one report as we never changed where we parked though it could be looked at as two separate hikes.
we started up the southern most ski trails on the winslow side of the ski way. pretty hard base with a bit of loose stuff on top. from the top of the skiway we bushwhacked southeast to winslow ledge. lots of whippy woods to start then open going to the recognized highpoint. not a lot of snow depth, but plenty for snowshoes with a breakable crust on top much of the way.
more of the same in terms of snow and open woods to the summit of sugar hill. we followed our tracks back to the skiway. on the descent we skipped a couple of the steeper sections of ski trail by bushwhacking down and along side the trail.
next we headed up the Appalachian trail towards holts ledge. the trail was hard packed by mostly boots down low. breakable crust on trapper john spur which we left early on a line towards bear. the snow was breakable crust most of the way and we were able to find good lines up through the cliffy sections below the recognized high point. once back below the cliffs we bushwhacked direct up to holts ledge finding mostly open woods and moderate grades. the upper part of the trail above the viewpoints was less travelled than down low, but had still seen traffic. great views at dusk from the viewpoints before the final descent back to the trailhead. |
